The Rocky Mountain Research Fellowship is an endowed program funded by the Justine and Leslie Fidel Bailey Trust. It is designed to encourage highly qualified graduate students to apply their talents to conducting research in the national parks. It is also intended to convey the importance of communicating park research to the public.

The Role of Genetics in Bighorn Sheep Success in Rocky

Katie’s general research focus is population genetics and she will be spending her summer fellowship studying bighorn sheep herds within Rocky Mountain National Park. Her work will include DNA collection from individuals within herds in order to quantify current genetic diversity. This study will address RMNP concerns about a possible past genetic bottleneck event that could have decreased diversity within herds and therefore affected vitality and recruitment of young.
